Transsion CMF Design Team's Infinity: A Fusion of Art and Technology

Smartphone Design Inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s House of Infinite Mirrors

The Transsion CMF Design Team has created a groundbreaking smartphone design, "Infinity", that merges art and technology. Drawing inspiration from Yayoi Kusama's House of Infinite Mirrors, the design presents an illusion of infinite space, offering consumers a unique visual experience.

The "Infinity" smartphone is a first in the industry, employing infinitely reflective photoelectric technology with artistic characteristics. When the light is turned on, the phone not only changes color but also presents a 3D light effect, giving the device a futuristic feel. The design is interactive, allowing users to see text message alerts without opening the screen. This innovative use of technology allows the slim phone to offer a 3D visual experience of light.

The design was realized through the infinite reflection of light via the upper and lower plating of the smartphone's back cover. The process involved electroplating the bottom of the back cover with mirror silver, silk-screening the pattern to be presented, and then deplating to ensure that the pattern area could transmit more light. Mirror silver plating was also applied to the upper trim pieces, with a certain thickness in between the two, allowing the light to be constantly reflected.

The project began in October 2022 in Shenzhen, China, and was completed in February 2023. The design team conducted extensive research on cell phone photoelectric effects and presented various light effects to research users for selection. The 3D stereoscopic overlay technology was developed in collaboration with hardware engineers following positive feedback from the users.

The design posed several challenges, primarily due to the low power of cell phone LED lights. The brightness would decay after the light was reflected multiple times, necessitating constant adjustments to the thickness of the coating to achieve the desired light throughput. The number of visible reflective layers was affected by the distance reflected between patterns, requiring constant adjustments to the gap between the two layers of coating to achieve a perfect render without raising the camera area too high.

The "Infinity" design was awarded Silver in the A' Design Quality and Innovation Award in 2023. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
